Congresswoman-elect Leni Robredo, widow of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo, vowed on Wednesday to pursue legislative proposals that her late husband wanted passed by Congress.

The newly-elected Camarines Sur lawmaker was the first among neophyte lawmakers of the 16th Congress to visit the Batasan Pambansa complex where they would hold office in the next three years.

Robredo said she conferred with Secretary General Marilyn Barua Yap to inquire about the hiring of her congressional staff and their qualifications.

“I couldn’t invite anyone without knowing what the requirements are, kaya iyon ang pinaka-purpose ng visit ko.  I want to start headhunting kasi if I want to work really hard, I have to choose the right people,” she explained.

A House security detail revealed that Robredo has been offered to take over the office that will be vacated by Deputy Speaker Erin Tanada, who is on his last term as congressman of Quezon.  It is located at the new south annex building.

The new solon won over Nelly Favis-Villafuerte, wife of outgoing Rep. Luis Villafuerte.

Robredo credited her victory to the hundreds of campaign volunteers, mostly the youth.

A lawyer, the incoming congresswoman said she has not set her sights on any particular committee to joint, saying that she is still studying these legislative panels.

However, she vowed to pursue legislative measures that would grant incentives to law enforcers and other public servants who are able to excel in carrying out their duties.

Robredo said this has been the idea of her late husband, adding that the bill would help guarantee efficiency in the bureaucracy.
