Bohol, CV contribute P44 billion
to PH tourism earnings

Central Visayas, including Bohol, contributed P44 billion to the Philippines’ earning from tourism last year.

According to Rep. Edgar Chatto, the Department of Tourism (DOT) considered the figure to be a conservative estimate, but it still shows that the region pumped in over one-third of the Philippine income from the industry.

The new vice chairman of the Committee on Tourism of the House of Representatives, Chatto serves Bohol’s First District where tourist gem Panglao island belongs.

He met and other solons in Central Visayas met with DOT Regional Director Shalimar Tamano late last week on the updates and vital concerns of the industry in the region.

Available DOT data further shows that by the end of 2018, Central Visayas received roughly 8,099,346 visitors.

With Cebu and Bohol in the lead, Tamano said there are many factors which make Central Visayas a powerhouse in terms of tourism.

Chatto said the DOT-7 is creating a Regional Tourism Master Plan (RTMP) which, once done and launched, will be the first of its kind in the country, Chatto said.

“I am very excited for this. After all, this is one of the visions of the National Tourism Act of 2009,” the congressman said.

The law was principally authored in the Lower House by Chatto himself when he first served in Congress in 2001-2010.

Chatto said they also discussed the plans for Central Visayas to launch a maritime brochure for island hopping; create a masterplan for meetings, incentives, conferences and events (MICE); and improve DOT personnel services at the Panglao airport.

Further, they assessed the impact of social media. (Ven rebo Arigo)
