After the deadline for the withdrawal of candidacies and the substitution of candidates officially ended on Monday, two members of the dominant Lakas-Kampi CMD will still be slugging it out in the second district congressional race.
Gov. Erico Aumentado and Trinidad Mayor Judith Cajes are both determined to win the Congress seat to be vacated by the latter's husband, three-term Rep. Roberto Cajes.
While anticipating a tight race to watch, some political watchers were expecting Mayor Cajes would withdraw at the last minute and avert a showdown between party allies and keep the ruling coalition's "unity ticket" intact.
But despite having been stripped of her certificate of nomination and acceptance (Cona) by the Lakas-Kampi national directorate, the lady Cajes is pushing on with her bid.
Reports reaching the Chronicle revealed that the Trinidad mayor continues making her rounds in the northern corridor with her husband closely guarding their barangay leaders making regular loyalty checks.
Aumentado on the other hand will have to mount a tight campaign to prevail over his second district rival who undeniably possesses the machinery and logistics being the most influential politician in the district.
At the 5 p.m. cut-off for the filing of COCs last Monday, the provincial Comelec office reported no more changes in the slate of three major political parties having candidates for the positions of governor, vice governor, board members and congressmen in the three districts of the province.
Election assistant Malou Cempron said only board member Concepcion Lim has filed for substitution of Rep. Adam Jala who withdrew for the position of vice governor under the Lakas-Kampi.
December 14, was the deadline for withdrawal of candidacies and the filing of COC for substitute candidates under Comelec guidelines.
Provincial board member and Liga ng mga Barangay president Lim filed her COC Monday last week to be the official running mate of gubernatorial bet Rep Chatto.
