In his speech, Binay made a pitch for national and local candidates of the opposition United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) but devoted time to campaign for his children. With Nancy’s accidental candidacy, the Binays face criticism of expanding their dynasty from Makati to the national scene.

The Vice President, though, sought to address the charge, first by citing Nancy’s popularity.

“Si Nancy na hinahamak-hamak nila, ito ay nung pinaplano-plano, noong gustong patakbuhin, ang unang survey 19%. Tapos ako noong makalaban ko si Mar Roxas, 54% against 2%. Kada survey, pataas nang pataas hanggang sa manalo ako. Biro 'nyo, 54-2, si Nancy 19%,” the Vice President said.

(Nancy, who they have been criticizing, started out in surveys with a score of 19%. When I ran against Mar Roxas in the 2010 vice presidential race, he started 54% against my 2%. In every survey, I went up until I won. Imagine, 54-2 but Nancy is already at 19%.)

In an interview with Rappler, Mayor Binay also said having 4 Binays in government is not a consolidation of power.

“Even if my two sisters win, one congresswoman and one senator, it doesn’t mean we already hold Congress. My siblings will be just two out of many lawmakers. It doesn’t mean we can manipulate the Senate and Congress,” he said.

Mayor Binay added: “They will be there, represent the people and use Makati as a model. That’s what we always say, ‘If we did it in Makati, we can do it in the entire country.’”

While Mayor Binay is not expecting a major challenge to his re-election, he admitted that the race is heated in the vice mayoral level.

Binay is fielding running mate Marjorie de Veyra against ally-turned-rival Vice Mayor Romulo “Kid” Pena of the ruling Liberal Party.

Both the mayor and the vice president endorsed De Veyra in the rally, praising her work as former city administrator and head of the Makati Social Welfare Department, and her loyalty to the Binay family.

Besides De Veyra, UNA candidates in Makati include re-electionist 1st District Rep Monique Lagdameo, and majority of the incumbent councilors seeking re-election.

however you defend it, however you call it, dynasty of service or dynasty of wealth sourced from politics, even if you all die for the country, you're still a dynasty, all of you not making any effort to take on other career paths but to take the easy way by riding on the coattails of a politician of a patriarch.

Mrs. Binay seeks case dismissal

MANILA, Philippines—Former Makati Mayor Elenita Binay on Thursday asked the Sandiganbayan  to dismiss a graft case filed against her by the Ombudsman almost 7 years ago, citing delays in the proceedings.

Through her lawyers, the wife of Vice President Jejomar Binay said the long delay had violated her constitutional right to a speedy trial which, she added, constituted sufficient ground for the dismissal of the case.

In a motion before the antigraft court’s 5th Division, Binay “[invoked] the longstanding doctrine that in the hierarchy of rights, the Bill of Rights takes precedence over the right of the state to prosecute, and when weighed against each other, the scales of justice tilt toward the former.”

Binay is charged with violating the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, along with coaccused City Councilor Salvador Pangilinan, former city administrator Nicanor V. Santiago Jr., former city treasurer Ernesto A. Aspillaga and private defendant Bernadette Aquino.

The case involves the alleged rigged public bidding in August 2009 for a P72-million supply contract which the Makati government ended up awarding to Office Gallery International Inc.

In her testimony, Audit Commissioner Heidi Mendoza linked Binay and the former city officials to alleged fraud in the transaction.

Binay argued that the information was originally filed on Oct. 3, 2006, but she and her coaccused were arraigned only on Dec. 3, 2010.

Binay: ‘I pity my daughter’

LUCENA CITY, Philippines – Amidst mounting opposition against political dynasties, Vice President Jejomar Binay could not help but pity his daughter, Nancy, who is running for senator under Binay’s United Nationalist Alliance (UNA).

Speaking to thousands at the Quezon Convention Center on Friday, the Vice President said alleged efforts to discredit his daughter, Nancy, were unfair.

He said that his daughter has been subjected to demolition efforts “kawawa naman ang anak ko [I pity on my daughter].”

The younger Binay has been hit with criticism after criticism, particularly over her lack of experience in public office, something which she admitted hurt the most out of all the attacks she has received.

But in a recent interview, the UNA candidate maintained that she had no regrets in joining politics and was even willing to “go through this process all over again.”

The opposition has cried foul over attacks on Binay, San Juan Representative Joseph Victor Ejercito Estrada, son of former President Joseph Estrada; and Cagayan Representative Jack Enrile, son of Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, saying that it was likely the work of the Liberal Party.

What was necessary at this point was for a new kind of politics, one that is devoid of mudslinging, according to the Vice President.

“Sana magsama-sama tayo sa bagong pulitika kung saan walang paninira [We’re hoping that we can be united towards a new politics, where there is no criticism],” he said.
