Quezon City congressman-elect and incumbent mayor
Feliciano Belmonte Jr. said on Tuesday he has started the groundwork for his House speakership bid and has just been waiting for the go-signal of the Liberal Party.
In an interview on the sidelines of the canvassing of election returns Tuesday morning at the Quezon City Hall, Belmonte said he had talked to some party mates about his plans for the House speakership.
“â€In the meantime I’ve been talking to some of my party mates, doing a bit of PR work,†the outgoing mayor jested with reporters.
Belmonte will be stepping down from the mayoral post on June 30 to assume his post as congressman of Quezon City’s fourth district.
“Well if the Liberal Party gives me the go-signal to try out for the House speakership, definitely I will do it,†he said, adding that the support of his partymates would be important.
Belmonte could face President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who has been leading her rivals by a mile in Pampanga’s second congressional district race amid reports that the Lakas-Kampi CMD would most probably field her in the speakership race.
