By Sunday Post Newspaper Bohol is apparently on the right track where facing challenges is concerned.
Vice President Noli de Castro made this observation during the 154th
Bohol Foundation Day celebration. De Castro was the keynote speaker during the program commemorating July 22, 1854 as the day when Bohol, together with Siquijor, became a separate political, military and religious province from Cebu.
Noting the old churches dotting the province, he said the deep
faith of the Boholanos – nurtured and passed on to the next generations – is needed “especially now in the face of socio-economic challenges the entire world faces today.â€
“This has made the
Boholano rise despite the high cost of oil, oil products and rice, and natural and made-made calamities aggravated by the oil and food issues,†he said.
“The
Boholanos have taken the right direction in adopting President Carlos P. Garcia’s ‘Filipino First’ policy in the face of globalization clearly manifested in the creations and handicrafts offered for sale by local entrepreneurs; the conduct of trade fairs focusing on the One Town-One Product (Otop) concept as well as embracing austerity measures like practical living and prioritizing needs,†the Philippines’ housing czar observed.
President Garcia’s legacies in governance are timeless, he said, at the same time lavishing praise on the current leaders led by Governor-on-leave Erico Aumentado, Acting Gov. Julius Caesar Herrera, Acting Vice Gov. Cesar Tomas Lopez and the three congressmen – Reps. Edgar Chatto, Roberto Cajes and Adam Relson Jala of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd districts, respectively.
Along with President Garcia, these officials, he said, have shown the Boholanos a fine example of local governance leadership, putting Bohol – and
the Philippines – on the map of the world in the same manner that Datu Sikatuna, the
Boholano chieftain who entered a blood compact to seal his newly minted friendship then with Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legaspi did on March 16, 1565
History will tell that the blood compact was the first ever treaty of friendship that the Philippines entered into with a foreign nation.
The vice president also said the Boholanos are the epitome of the adage “saving for a rainy day.â€
De Castro said he is familiar with this trait – and even gave anecdotes to the amusement of the crowd that packed
Bohol Cultural Center – because "he once shared his life with a
Boholana, making his daughter by her
half-Boholana, and his grandchildren, ¼ Boholanos.†high cost of oil, oil products and rice, and natural and made-made calamities aggravated by the oil and food issues,†he said.

Gov’s message
For his part, Aumentado said the foundation day is “a time to look back to where we were in order to see the future.â€
“With the help of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Kabayan Noli de Castro, Bohol is on its steady course to progress,†he said.
And as the province moves forward, the foundation day is also time to honor the distinguished lady and gentlemen who have contributed much for the economic, cultural, heritage and tourism development of Bohol, he added, referring to Beatriz Zobel de Ayala of Ayala Foundation, President and Chief Executive Officer Lance Gokongwei of Cebu Pacific Air, General Manager Oscar Sevilla of the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) and Chairman Lucio Tan of the Philippine Airlines (PAL).
The awardees, he said, are the modern Sikatuna – whose friendship and cooperation have brought the province to greater heights.
