Abolish Party-List System in the Philippines
« on: May 29, 2010, 10:44:17 PM »
By Tina Santos
Philippine Daily Inquirer

The National Bureau of Investigation on Friday filed charges against five people who allegedly attempted to sell party-list seats at P10 million to P15 million each, through their supposedly strong connections at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and Malacañang.

Charged with estafa and usurpation of authority at the Manila Prosecutor’s Office were Mary Ann Fujiwara, 50; Joel Pelo, 42; Wenceslao Malinao Jr. 55; Prudencia Malinao, 53; and Ma. Elizabeth Coronel, 39.

The five were arrested in an entrapment operation at the Century Park Hotel coffee shop on Wednesday, following the filing of a complaint by the Buhay party-list group.

Buhay, which is affiliated with the El Shaddai charismatic group, said it was approached by the suspects guaranteeing, for a fee, Buhay’s clinching some of the reserved seats for party-list groups in the House of Representatives. Other party-list groups also claimed to have been approached with similar offers, the NBI said.

Gloria Arroyo's son is on a party list that represents the poor security guards. It seems Arroyo's is the only kid of a country's president whose bread and butter is to guard lives and properties. Long live security guards in the Philippines.

And while we're at it, long live, too, influence peddling (a.k.a. traffic of influence). Too bad security guards are being used as pawns for lust for power.

Partylist representation is mandated by our Constitution so it is not easy to abolish. It needs to be amended.

Underscoring the obvious is as useful as the party list system.

Or task COMELEC to thoroughly screen..partylist groups...a track record of at least 10 years should be a part of the requirements for partylist groups...

MAO NA NI..

Party list system just pretends to represent some groups of people, yet to me, it's just an easy way to get a position in the government... merely just increasing our gov't budget but really has little impact on the society and in political system in general.

some partylists are really doing their jobs...it's those that are for there simply to have a piece of the money pie that should be screened...gihimo naman nila nga negosyo gud..they invest so many millions (around 10M)to get into governments funds to the tune of 70million a year, besides other perks..

We can not abolish the party-list because it is already a part of our political system.

then COMELEC should be stricter in the acceptance of partylist accreditations and recognition...

this is a redundancy of functions. i will surely vote for the abolishment of the partylist system. it's not really serving it's purpose. it's being used by other people to gain entry to congress to get pork barrel to spent and squander for personal gains. what's the real purpose of putting district congressmen who can represent it's constituents that covers everything from marginalized sector down to indigents? isn't that enough? if party list is abolished, the government can save alot of money and the same time weaken the enemies of the state. right now, they are funding their own enemies.

Very well said...ang uban nga party-list tinukod usab sa mga politiko, non-political arm of the political lord mao nga masolo gyud ang power..But, in fairness there are some that really serve their sectoral constituents, sadly, still a duplication.

although i like the idea of the SK and the party list because of its noble intentions, its the kind of leaders we have i am against. they are very selfish and manipulative only motivated for their own vested interests.

so, yes reluctantly i have to agree with you bai arki. but how can this be done?

Panigurado wa ganing na makatrabaho as security guard. Dia puy COCOFED representative kay wa puy kalubian. BUHAY party list ni Mike Velarde kay way girepresent nga sector, mura man ba ug ang mga tawo gibinuangan ra.

It should be a requirement nga kung ikaw maoy representative sa party list kinahanglan unta nga ikaw may experience ug at least 5 or 10 years sa sector nga imohang girepresentar. Kay niining pamaagiha tataw gajud nga ang imong kasing kasing ug gugma tua sa pagpalambo ug pag uswag sa sector nga imohang gidala. As an organizational requirement nga may number of years gikan sa pagkatukod sa party list usa puwede maaccredit as party list under COMELEC.

Kon atong e abolish ang party-list ug SK, we will have a Charter Change. These are one of the basic laws in our Constitution.

Kung maohon imposible ni matangtang karong term ni Noynoy Sir FD. Charter change is the least of concern sa Aquino Administration even MAr Roxas stressed out during the campaign period that there will be no charter change under Aquino-Roxas administration. Patay, lipay mga party list representatives. ;D

In favor ko if ma-abolish ni cya kay the real essence of representing the poor and the marginalized was not followed. look at the assets of the sectoral reps, they have millions. Those with monies can create supposed to be marginalized. So they are Office of the Fake and Purated Representathieves!!!
