"IF THE SAND COULD SING "
By Jaroslav Seifert
If the sand could sing under a woman's feet,
I would be one of those who believes That a smile is near.
And were it on the neck, the light palm of a woman would still have such strength that it could lift any burden.
I'm sitting with a tired doctor-friend in front of a pavilion.
Little by little dusk descends. ,
These are the moments when there is talk and people are listening but no one hears anything.
We discuss women. He is a gynecologist.
He starts laughing bitterly: "Cynical soldiers in the Middle Ages would not fight side-by-side with them because they said that women were glum.
We can stand women only after fifty, and even then it has to be done slyly. And love?
What can we say about that?
Damned genitals!"
And I got sick with yearning.
But that was not written in my case history.
