I like the cross and the candle lit before her. It's symbolic in my opinion.

She is covered in the veil signifying her purity and her singledom, which when is lifted by her groom, signifies her union with him.

The cross signifies her faith and her humility before the Lord, before her wedding.

The candle signifies her love, and the love between her and her husband-to-be. It is one Candle.
One Flame. Two bodies are made into one.

-----

Genesis 2: 24
For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

Modern-Traditional Wedding~

When my mother and father were married, they both were united with this same drapery and white silk rope.
Only, my father was attired in one of the most expensive barongs, and my mother was dressed in elegant Filipina Maria-Clara style Wedding Dresses. The veil that she wore only showed a semblance of her face, but when my father lifted her veil, my mother's beautiful face was revealed to my father. United. Two bodies but One Flesh. One Heart.

It was in a beautiful August 24, 1984.
All of Valencia were there to witness the event.
Beautiful~

Elegant,..

The wedding dress I want my wife to wear has to be completely covered. The old Maria Clara Style that my mother wore or the one that my Lolas wore. And her face will be covered with a beautiful veil. The dress will be elegant and supreme.

The wedding will be in a cathedral. God Willing. :)

Either in St. Joseph's Cathedral in Bohol or somewhere in the Visayas.~

i had a Filipiniana wedding, dong lorenzo. i wish you were there. you could have enjoyed the "barrio fiesta" theme. there were lechon, humba, isda, lambay, adobo, lukon... ang gikagubtan mao ang kiling-kiling nga ice cream. the decorations were white balloons lang and flowers. very simple. music was played by a rondalla before the wedding ceremony, while the loboc brass band, loboc youth choir, and more choirs and singers provided the music. my hubby sang, "i'll take care of you" while i was walking down the aisle. then we sang, "the prayer" when we lighted the center candle to signify God's light. all the ladies wore filipiniana gowns ala santa cruzan while the men wore barong. as a gift na lang nila nako, it was a wear-your-own-gown agreement. basta mag-crown sila. bibo baya pod.

Melrose, I do truly love the old style Filipiniana Weddings. My parents still have their wedding video, which we recently converted into DVD, and I have watched the wedding ceremony, observing the style and the fashion implemented. My father purchased for my mother an expensive and beautiful 19th century style Filipiniana Wedding Dress..her veil was so beautiful, and long, the dress was beautiful, and she wore a long barong cape that added depth tot he dress. My father was adorned with the Barong Tagalog, which was well woven. Beautiful. 19th century ang style wedding. It was held in the Santo Nino Church in Valencia, Bohol. The entire church was filled, beautiful kaayo. It lasted hours. It seemed as if all of Valencia was there.

But it was beautiful because they were married before GOD and before the people. Vows exchanged in the traditional style. I loved seeing how my father and mother were tied with the white silk robe symbolizing their union before GOD and man.
My mother looked so beautiful in her wedding attire. Chinese beauty, but adorned in the Imperial Spanish attire. My father, in his prime, confident look with his barong. Confident and handsome. Man and wife jud.

They were married in the manner that my grandparents were married, my great grandparents, my great great grandparents so on so forth. In the same church. For generations.

I would also like to continue the tradition. The best and only the best. :)

Sr. Prudente,  I am so intrigued with the beauty of the Traditional Filipino Wedding. I would like to, definately, maintain the tradition of my ancestors and my family that lived before I ever came to be.

I will have to ask my parents about the intricacies of Pamalaye, Taligpung and Pangagad.

:)

Thank you.

The Different Wedding Ceremonies:

The Wedding Rites

The Bride and her Father marches to the altar. The Groom meets them, and all three will face the Priest/Minister. The question of who gives the bride away is asked, to which the bride's Father answers, "I do" . He then gives her daughter's hand to the groom, after which he takes his designated seat in the front row with his wife.

The Exchange of Vows follow.

Ring Ceremony: The Priest/Minister may, at this point bless the Bride, Groom and rings with holy water. He holds their hands together in unity, then they exchange rings.

Arrhae or Coin Ceremony: The Priest/Minister then drops 13 pieces of coins (silver or gold) called arras into the Groom's waiting hands, who in turn drops it into the Bride's hands. The Bride then puts her hand above the Groom's then drops the arras into his hands again. The Groom allows the coins to then be dropped into a plate held by an acolyte.

The metal tinkling of the coins being passed from one pair of hands to the other, is a distinctive reminder of the groom's promise to take care of his wife materially. The bride in return, by giving back the coins to his hands, convey that what they both earn become part of each other's. The trickling sound also signifies abundance and success in the couple's joint efforts. The husband gives his material earnings to his wife who manages, saves and invests the money wisely, as basic Filipino tradition dictates.

Veil Ceremony: In the Catholic ceremony, the Priest continues with the nuptial mass until the "Sanctus". When the bell for the Sanctus rings, it is also a signal for the veil sponsors to come up to the altar. In Protestant ceremonies, the Minister explains the veil ceremony to the congregation and this constitutes as the cue for the veil sponsors.

Together, they pin a veil from the groom's shoulders, extending it to cover the bride's head and shoulders. This is symbolic of the groom pledging his strength and protection to his bride - the wife who he promises to take care of, from this day forward.

Cord Ceremony: The Cord Ceremony follows immediately after. The Cord Sponsors come up to where the Bride and Groom are kneeling, and put a figure of eight cord over the veils that are on the heads and shoulders of the Bride and Groom. This cord symbolizes unity and infinity - a love together, forever!

Candle Ceremony: The Candle Ceremony is first and last. As soon as all the primary and secondary sponsors have been seated, the Candle Sponsors proceed to the altar where they light the two side candles beside the middle and larger (unity) candle. This represents the two lives and two spirits who will be joined together.

Towards the end of the ceremony, at a signal from the Priest/Minister, the Bride and Groom come up and approach the candles. They each take the smaller candles, and use it to light the middle unity candle. This means that from then on, their lives go together, kindled as one.

I went to Bohol this last July 2010 and when I was in my grandparent's house, i saw a large portrait of my father arriving from Saudi Arabia. The picture was taken in 1983 (i think). My dad was a Civil Engineer in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for some time before we moved to the 'states.

I noticed immediately that he had a beard in his youth.
He was 25 when this picture was taken. haha..

dad,

ako,

It was in that church, in Valencia, that my parents were wed, my grandparents were wed, my great-grandparents were wed, etc.
It is in that same church where I also would like to hold my wedding in the future. :)

Thank You, Cujo, yes she indeed is a very loving, gentle and kind mother. Both my mother and father celebrated their 26th Wedding Anniversary.
We (4 children) are the product of their Love, and the Union that they exchanged before God and before man alike.

Mom is beautiful and Dad is very handsome. :)

My mother is strong, resilient, hardworking, loving and steadfast. My father is the typical loving , doting Father. My Father is strict, but his love for his children reigns supreme in his heart (his reason for going to Saudi, as well as moving to the US). The two of them are a good team, Thanks be to God.

Sometimes we would joke with our parents how they were able to raise 4 children by themselves. And not only that, 3 of the 4 children are boys. (I am the eldest of 4, and one of 3 boys). As well as raising a very refined and respectful daughter (my younger sister, who is a 2nd year Medical Student...)

My parents taught us one thing: That Family Stick together. This is why we love and adore our parents.

My mother and father's Love is the physical representation of God's Love in our Lives.

My father is a great role model, Thanks be to God. He is not afraid to speak his mind, he is honest (brutally honest), and he is a man that lives up to principle. He is a good father, a great provider, a loving husband, and from their experiences, it tells us, their children, that patience, trust, honesty and Love completes and cements a marriage.

Trust and Honesty, is important.

My father , to me, represents the best qualities of a Filipino man: his devotion to family, his upholding of culture, and the love and fear of God.

He should know that his children adore him. Especially his boys, who want to be just like him.

I asked my youngest brother, Andre, what he wanted to be like when he grows up. Andre answered immediately, "Just like dad!"

Immediately ning ngisi among Papa...hahaha!

~~

Ikaw pood, Belle, i am sure that your son will love and cherish you as his mother. It is the beauty of a parent-child relationship. Love and Respect.

Ayaw pag hilak lang, Belle, you should count yourself very lucky to have a beautiful and wonderful son.
Raise him wisely and in fear and love of God, and when he becomes a man, he will be your vanguard, your defense his love for you will make everything worth the while. There is beauty and divine trust between a parent and child. It is the earthly representation of God's Love.

Keep on smiling. :)
