Very nice picture, Dong!  My mother's brothers and nephews and most of our relatives in my Mom's side are fishermen.  They are hardworking people.  When I was young, I thought it was so huge a sacrifice to wake up so early in the morning like 2 or 3 a.m. to go fishing and sometimes, their catch is only a few.

My maternal grandfather was a fisherman, and farmer. Spent most of his life fishing in the shores of Valencia. My paternal grandfather's family were all fishermen from Pintuyan, Southern Leyte.

In fact, most of the Lucino clan are fishermen in Pintuyan. Most are professionals, but fish on the side.

Fishing is in the blood, me-thinks.

Even I, go fishing in Lake Erie when Providence provides a beautiful day. I reiterate, fishing is in the blood. :)

One time I went fishing with my mom's brothers but I wasn't allowed to go with them anymore kay banhaan ko mao daw wala sila kuha. ;D

I remember when i was 4 years old i went out to the sea because my lolo went out with a group of fishermen. I wanted so badly to go with lolo because i would follow him wherever he went, either in the basak, mo follow jud ko niya. to barangay anas to retrieve saging from his banana land, etc.

Pero when he went out to fish he would never let me go with him, and i can remember being so angry kai gusto jud ko mo adto niya--how could he not let his own flesh and blood apo go with him. haha that was my reasoning sa unang panahon when i was 4 y/o.

So what i would do was sit on the beach and watch him sail out with his friends. I can still hear him yelling to me "Doy! mo balik lagi ko unya!"

I would wait for him in the beach until the whining hours of the afternoon. Actually na bu**** ahong lola thinking that i ran away, lol. they didn't know that i was in the beach waiting for my lolo ciano to come back.

But whenever lolo came back, he always came back with isda, daghaaaaang isda jud! he would bring back some baby sharks, nokos, and all kinds of isda. i would rush to him and hug him and he would ask, "ning huwat diay ka nako, doy?". and i would respond, "oo gud! gusto man ko mo adto pero ingoon man ka dili puydi!"

hahahaha!

and my lolo would carry me with one arm while he carried his fishes with the other.
He used to make the BEST kinilaw in the world! and the sabaw he would make, was uncomparable to anyone's. Lolo made the best jud.

I MISS those days. I miss waiting for him to come back, and seeing his smiling face as he landed on shore. :)

Dong, I can't imagine the joy he would feel when he sees you and your brothers and sister and your mom and dad and the rest of his family.  Please, please capture the moment with pictures for us, Dong!  You are lucky to have a loving grandpa in Lolo Ciano.  Please hug and make "amen" to him for us too, Dong!

Really? My father's clan hails from southern Leyte and Surigao. Well actually, the Lucino came from Surigao then part of the clan migrated to Southern Leyte, some stayed in Surigao. From Leyte, some came to Bohol.

Does your lolo come from Borgos? Pintuyan? Maasin? I have many relatives that hail in those regions.

My great grandfather (the father of my Lola Nating) was also pure Chinese. His full name was Tan Ngai Feiyi. The family name was Tan.

Does your Lolo speak Cantonese?
