An online campaign to encourage the public to plant 10 million trees by 2011 will be launched next week, according to organizers of the event.
The “10@10: The 10 Million Trees Campaign†will mark the 10th year anniversary of Luntiang Pilipinas (Green Philippines ), the urban forestry program founded by Senator Loren Legarda, who has been known to be a long-time environmental advocate, an e-mailed statement to media said.
Citing concerns for the “disastrous effects of the climate crisis worldwide,†the nationwide online campaign, to be launched on October 14, is hoping to encourage the “valuable contribution of individuals, private corporations and businesses, and national and local government agencies in planting 10 million trees by year 2011,†it said.
It also hopes to help mitigate the impact of global warming on the health, security, and lives of the Filipinos,†the statement said.
A memorandum of agreement among Luntiang Pilipinas, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Department of Agriculture (DA) has been signed, with these agencies serving as the monitoring networks to ensure the successful implementation of the campaign. Logistical support will be provided by Intel Philippines while the World AgroForestry Foundation will provide technical assistance for this campaign, it said. - source: PDI
