The posts of the Blaan Language Training and Culture Familiarization (BLTCF) FB page have been much criticized online in view of what most Blaan 'in-the-know' imply are wrong and awkward spelling of Blaan words. The critics may have used the first published Blaan dictionary as reference, which I think BLTCF fellows refuse to accept, so the Blaan behind the page are compiling their own versions. They have valid reasons, I think. The Blaan dictionary, which was published by the Condrado Ladislawa Alcantara Foundation, Inc. (CLAFI) as an offshoot of Project Flalok, with funding from USAID and technical support from DepEd Region XII, was not without flaws.
One, the publisher seemed to be unaware that Blaan communities are geographically dispersed in two regions, Sox and Davao. Only the Sox Blaan were involved in the project.
Two, the three Blaan dialectal variations in Koronadal, Davao and Sarangani Blaan were not considered. And it was unclear from which Blaan dialectal variations the the more than 60 writers and validators were representing.
Perhaps the initiators of BLTCF would agree with me if I propose that the next Blaan dictionary should be more inclusive, representative and comprehensive. One that is unquestionable, credible and acceptable to all Blaan communities in Sox and Davao regions, including the people behind the Blaan Language Training and Culture Familiarization FB page, whoever they may be. Peace!
