Navy seizes Illegal Fishing Activity at municipal waters of Tañon Strait

Headquarters, Naval Forces Central (HNFC), Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, November 11, 2021 – Navy vessel BRP Abraham Campo (PC396) together with the Naval Special Operations Unit 5 (NAVSOU5) and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) 7, conducted Maritime Interdiction Operations (MIO) and Joint Maritime Law Enforcement (MARLEN) Operations. The group seized one (1) fishing boat (F/B) conducting illegal fishing activity  at Municipal  Seawaters of Mckinley, Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental in the morning of November 6, 2021.

PC396 approached and caught F/B hauling her fishing nets surrounded by more or less 10 smaller bancas. The fishing boat was identified to be F/B Jhon and San with fifteen (15) fisherfolks on board. BRP Abraham Campo and BFAR7 together with the boarding team conducted physical inspection and validation of available information of the said F/B.

It was revealed that F/B Jhon & San together with its crew violated the following provisions under RA 10654:
1. Sec 86 – Unauthorized Fishing;
2. Sec 101 – Fishing in Marine Protected Area;
3. Sec 113 – Employing Unlicensed Fishworker; and
4. Sec 121 – Use of Unlicensed Gear.

Personnel of BFAR 7 issued apprehension certificate and violation sheet to the owner and boat captain. Furthermore, they informed the owner of the F/B that the formal charges will be filed corresponding to the violation committed.

NFC in coordination with other Law Enforcements Agencies will remain steadfast in safeguarding the maritime environment in the Visayas.
