Sketches of muralist Derrick Macutay
« on: March 18, 2021, 01:44:05 AM »
National Museum of the Philippines Director-Genera l Jeremy Barms with the relief mounted by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) on the pedestal featuring the historical marker for Homonhon, the site of the first landing of the Magellan-Elcano expedition on Philippine soil on 17 March 1521. The relief is based on the sketches of muralist Derrick Macutay and sculpted by Francis Apiles. It was inaugurated along with the historical marker of NHCP for the Homohon episode of the first circumnavigation of the world on 17 March 2021.

Depicted in the relief is the episode in Homonhon in which an unnamed ruler from Suluan, a nearby island, met Ferdinand Magellan, the captain-general of the expedition, on 18 March 1521.  Upon knowing that the expedition crew members were starving and needing nourishment, the Suluan chief brought them whatever provision they had at that time and resupplied the expedition with food. Prior to this, the expedition had been in wandering for four months across the Pacific without food and water.

. . . . .

Seeing this post? Curious what this is about? In 2021, we will commemorate the Philippine part in the achievement of science and humankind in circumnavigating the planet for the first time. Central in this commemoration is the 500th anniversary of the Victory at Mactan on 27 April 2021. These and more are collectively known as the 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines by virtue of Executive Order No. 103 (2020). Know more about the event here:

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
