The City Government of Maasin, headed by our City Mayor Nacional V. Mercado, which was represented by Atty. Romeo Geniston – City Administrator, thru the City Agriculture’s Office, conducted an Urban Mushroom Production and Processing Training under the Bayanihan II Urban Agriculture (UA) Program and High-Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) of the Department of Agriculture.
Mushroom culture has been gaining popularity in the Philippines and the demand continuously increases locally and abroad. It is suitable for growing in limited spaces, can be grown whole year-round, and it is effective in utilizing wastes abundant in urban areas such as coffee grinds, sawdust, woodchip, and compost.
The following will be provided under this component:
a. Distribution of mushroom bags;
b. Provision of sterilizing drums and other production equipment;
c. Establishment of mushroom house, if necessary;
d. Provision of processing and packaging equipment; and
e. Other relevant and necessary inputs and support services.
Present during the training were Regional HVCDP Focal Person - Romeo G. Delmo, Provincial Agriculturist - Myrna Bacala and our Supervising City Agriculturist - Virgilia Barrientos.
With this, the City Government of Maasin is encouraging the proponents to fully support the implementation of this program to further establish a resilient food system through Urban Farming.
