Baguio City Mayor Reinaldo Bautista, Jr. today called for the sustained tree planting around the huge rain basin of the city atop Mount Santo Tomas which has an approximate capacity of more than 10,000 cubic meters of potable water.
Bautista himself joined some 50 members and officers of the Baguio Correspondents and Broadcasters Club (BCBC) Sunday in planting more than 300 tree seedlings around the natural reservoir.
Records show that water at the basin is only released as potable water to the consumers of the Baguio Water District (BWD) during summer.
More than 10 years ago, the late Reynaldo Punongbayan of the Philippine Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) confirmed that the basin is a sturdy natural bowl-shaped depression of the earth because it had been a crater of an extinct volcano whose fuel or magma had been exhausted hundreds of years back.
