The Davao City Water District (DCWD) was unanimously chosen by 14 Cambodian delegates over the more than 600 water utilities in the Philippines as a model company.
DCWD General Manager Rodora Gamboa said the Philippine study tour for the foreign delegation last February 21-26 aimed at helping private water service providers (WSP) improve access to safe, piped water in 28 towns of Cambodia.
Gamboa said the delegates’ tour was funded by the United States Agency International Development (USAID).
Gamboa also expressed her gratitude to the USAID for acknowledging the achievements of DCWD in the water industry.
“It is our pleasure to impart to you (Cambodian delegates) the best practices that our utility had undertaken in the past so you may also learn from them,†she said.
Some of the awards and recognitions the DCWD has received in the past include: Most Outstanding Water District (very large category) given by the Local Water Utilities Administration, ranked fourth among the 12 Asia-Pacific Countries with the most successful efforts in reducing Non Revenue Water.
In 1997, the Asian Development Bank’s Second Water Utilities Data Book ranked DCWD as Number One among 50 water utilities in the Asia Pacific Region, sharing equal glory with Singapore and Johore Bahru of Malaysia
“I believe that management and administrative lessons in running a water utility, especially the most painful and costly ones need not be personally experienced in order to learn from them,†Gamboa said. -PNA
