FIRST MACTAN-MANDAUE BRIDGE
The first Mactan bridge, officially the Serging Veloso Osmeña Jr. Bridge (formerly Mactan-Mandaue Bridge), is an 864-meter box truss bridge that was designed by Filipino engineers, with construction starting in 1970 and the bridge opening in 1973 to connect Cebu and Mactan Island.
While the original design of the first Mactan bridge was certainly built to the standards of its time (early 1970s), a JICA report noted that the bridge was "seriously damaged by typhoon Ruping" which consequently led to vehicle use being restricted to those weighing less than 5 tons due to concerns over structural integrity.
This history indicates that while it is an enduring structure, it has faced structural damage from a major typhoon event and requires ongoing condition surveys and rehabilitation to maintain its integrity against extreme weather and seismic risks.
