On May 2, 1935, the Sakdal or Sakdalista movement launched an ill-fated uprising in at least 14 towns in the Philippines. The devastating loss of the rebellion, which misled its followers that assistance would come from Japan, resulted to some 60 dead among the Sakdalistas. Its founder, former Senate employee Benigno Ramos, fled to Tokyo where he would eventually be arrested.
Established initially as a publication of the same name in 1930, the term Sakdal was believed to have come from the French writer Emile Zola's "J'Accuse...!", an open letter published in 1898. However, it was also said that Sakdal followers believe their movement's name was derived from James 1:4, "At inyong pabayaan na ang pagtitiis ay magkaroon ng sakdal na gawa, upang kayo'y maging sakdal at ganap, na walang anoman kakulangan." (text from Ang Dating Biblia, 1905)
In preparation for the 1935 national election, Sakdal entered a coalition with other opposition parties including Gregorio Aglipay's Republican Party, Emilio Aguinaldo's National Socialist Party, and Rufino Tumanda's Partido Komunista ng Pilipinas (PKP-1930). Their participation in the election was thrown off by the May uprising. Nonetheless, Ramos would return to the Philippines in 1938 aboard a German ship, forming the successor party called Partido Ganap de Filipinas.
While Ramos was in prison and Gregorio Tobias was exercising leadership of the party, Ganap would be one of the opposition parties challenging the dominant Nacionalista Party in the 1941 election. During the Pacific War, which reached the Philippines a month after the election, Ganap would be dissolved, becoming instead an active part of the Kapisanan sa Paglilingkod sa Bagong Pilipinas (KALIBAPI), the sole political organization allowed to operate under Japanese occupation.
