Gen. Mariano Castaneda Of Philippine Resistance (Original Full Text Article from the Archives of the New York Times, September 9, 1970 Issue)
MANILA, Sept. 8 (UPI)—Maj. Gen. Mariano N. Castaneda, a military hero who saved the life of the republic's first president, died here yesterday. He was 76 years old.
General Castaneda kicked from the speakers platform an assassin's grenade aimed at President Manuel Roxas shortly after President Roxas took office in 1946.
He had a distinguished military career in World War II and was cited for gallantry and military leadership by General of the Army Douglas MacArthur. General Castaneda survived the Bataan death march to organize resistance group.
He is survived by his widow and six children.
