#OnThisDay January 12, 1889, the Asociación Hispano-Filipina, composed of Filipinos and Spaniards for the purpose of securing reforms for the Philippines, is inaugurated in Madrid.

Asociación Hispano-Filipina, an organization composed of Filipinos and Spaniards, was formed in Madrid, Spain calling for reforms in the Philippines during Spanish colonization.

Prominent Filipino reformist members of the association were Jose Rizal, Graciano Lopez Jaena, Marcelo H. del Pilar, Mariano Ponce, Jose Panganiban, Antonio Luna, Eduardo de Lete and others. Spanish members include Dr. Miguel Morayta, professor of history at the Universidad Central de Madrid and former minister in the Spanish government, and Felipe de la Corte, author of several works on the Philippines.

The association also created a newspaper called the ‘Revista del Circulo Hispano-Filipino,’ in order to address to the government authorities in Spain all the abuses and harsh treatment being done to the Philippines and the changes that they wanted to be done. However, the newspaper did not last long because of the lack of money to fund its operation.

The Filipinos who were living in Spain also created the La Solidaridad. It became the official newspaper of the Propaganda Movement. It was first printed and circulated in Barcelona, Spain on February 15, 1889. Unfortunately, the printing of the La Solidaridad as well as the association did not last long essentially because of lack of financing and the reformists themselves were not united.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
