Bol-anon kiddie singing group, the Loboc Children’s Choir (LCC) did one for the record again when it bagged the Best Performance In A Concert By a Group during the recent 21st Aliw Awards at the Manila Hotel November 11.
The award is LCCs second from Aliw; in 2004, LCC also bagged Best Choral Group Award, after winning First Prize in the Europe and Its Folksongs Festival and Competition in Barcelona.
Aliw Foundation and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts put up the award.
This year, the award is in recognition of the group’s outstanding performance during the Encuentro Filipino series of concerts, which opened at the PETA Theater Center. The Manila concert was to launch the two-month United States and Canada concert tour, choir director Lutgardo Labad said in a statement.
The Encuentro Filipino concerts adopted a concept and stage direction by Labad, himself a renowned Boholano musician and musical director and choir musical director Alma Taldo.
The choir took the Encuentro tour while it represented the country in the international Filipino Hispanic heritage conference in the US: at the University of California in Riverside and in Dartmouth College at Hampshire College under heritage musicologist Dr. William Summers, the articulate Labad said.
Encuentro Filipino in Manila also featured an interactive demonstration and lectures by distinguished Filipino music scholars, discussing topics focusing on music borne out of the Philippine and Spanish interaction, the former head of the Capitol Center for Culture and the Arts Development (CCAD) explained.
In Manila, the choir performed with other nationally acclaimed singing groups: the Ateneo Chamber Singers, UP Cherubims and Seraphims, Mandaluyong Children’s Choir and the UP singing Ambassadors.
Later, the LCC performed a total of 19 concerts in 17 full houses in the USA and Canada in a period of seven weeks, he added
At the concerts, performing close to a total 10,000 people, Encuentro impressed Boholano, Filipino-American, Filipino-Canadian communities in Olympia, Seattle, Riverside, Los Angeles, New Hampshire, Baltimore, Washington DC, New York, Houston, Toronto, St. Louis, Overland Park, Kansas City, San Francisco, Lincoln, Eagle Rock LA, and San Diego.
Encuentro was sponsored by a network of partners and friends led by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Department of Tourism, OISHI and BENCH, Provincial Government of Bohol, Offices of Congressmen Adam Jala and Edgar Chatto, Tagbilaran Mayor Dan Neri Lim and Loboc Mayor Leon Calipusan, BAMMI led by Mr. Jenju Lapez and Mrs. Tita Lapez, LAMMI, TBTK New York and the Confederation of Boholanos in the United States and Canada or CONBUSAC, PETA and many others.
