This vast territory was ruled from Manila during the Spanish rule for hundreds of years.
Palau was even considered part of the Philippines by the First Republic in Malolos but did not materialize because the Philippines was ceded by Spain to the United States together with Guam while Eastern Philippines (Marianas and Caroline Islands) was sold to Germany and later occupied by Japan then the United States during the height of WW2.
While the seat of the civil government of Islas Filipinas was in Manila, church administration of Guam and the surrounding islands originated from the Archdiocese of Cebu.
It was in Guam that Cebuano missionary catechist Pedro Calungsod was persecuted and martyred in 1672.
