63 years in service. Six decades!
Today, we bid farewell, say thank you for your service, and render our snappiest salute, to Fokker 259, a Fokker F-27-200 Friendship aircraft delivered brand new to the Philippine Air Force in 1959. She spent most of her life with the PAF flying under the 250th Presidential Airlift Wing, alongside the bigger F-28 Jet, before being transferred to the 220th Airlift Wing where she served as a tactical airlifter.
Up until recently, she was the oldest flying Fokker in the world, and us spotters would always go out of our way to go after her and photograph her. Through the years, the men and women of the Philippine Air Force maintained her to the highest standard. I can still remember my surprise when I saw her come out of maintenance a few years back - ultimo the Fokker company roundel and the Rolls Royce stickers sa Dart engines nya, bagong bago! Zero sign of her being a senior citizen!
Such is the testament to the dedication of the PAF in providing safe and reliable airlift capability to the people.
And now, it’s time to say goodbye.
She is now displayed at the Lopez People’s Park in Silay City, Bacolod, for everyone to enjoy.
So, 259, thank you, and happy retirement! I’ll miss hearing your screaming engines, but it’s now time for your well-deserved rest. See ‘ya!
Man, if airplanes could talk, grabe siguro ang mga kwento nito ….
Bittersweet, and for the last time, we say, "Fokker in sight!".
