#OnThisDay September 29, 1898, Ceremonies are held for the ratification of Philippine Independence, which was proclaimed in Kawit, Cavite, on June 12, 1898. Two weeks after it first convened on September 15, 1898.
The Congress declares the day a “public holiday in perpetuity.†In his address, President Emilio Aguinaldo appeals to Spain to recognize the newly installed republic and to help the Filipinos live their own independent existence. He announces the policy “The Philippines for the Filipinos.â€
