#OnThisDay September 4, 1896, first of a series of mass executions of Filipinos was ordered by Governor-General Ramon Blanco. Four members of Katipunan involved in the Battle of Pinaglabanan, San Juan del Monte, on August 30, 1896, were executed on the Campo de Bagumbayan.
Governor-General Ramon Blanco launched a policy retribution. He issued instructions to the guardia civil to round up the usual suspects and subject them to torture, conduct daily raids on homes and confiscate property. He created a permanent consejo de guerra (court martial) to effect speedy trials. For its first decision, the court condemned Sancho Valenzuela who participated in the Battle of Pinaglabanan and three other men, namely: Eugenio Silvestre, Modesto Sarmiento, and Ramon Peralta, to die by musketry. They were executed at the new killing field, Campo de Bagumbayan, just across Luneta.
