Press Release:
"With our proposed Zero Hunger Act, we hope to mobilize the food establishments to combat hunger among the poor with the help of charitable institutions. In the process, we also reduce food waste in the business sector," Bagong Henerasyon Party-list Rep. Bernadette Herrera said.
"Malaking kabawasan na sa naaaksayang pagkain at imbentaryo ng papa-expire na pagkain, nakatulong pa sa kapwa," the congresswoman said.
The House deputy majority leader added the surplus food donations for food rescue programs "can be an effective way to eliminate hunger affecting millions especially among the urban poor and in the poorest barangays in the provinces."
"Maraming institusyon na ang mayroon food banks, kaya mayroon nang mga programang pwedeng pamarisan. Hindi ito mula sa hangin o bula dahil nangyayari na ito bagaman hindi pa laganap," Herrera, a Rotary Club District Governor, also said.
Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million problem-solvers whose stated purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian service and to advance goodwill and peace around the world. Rotary has programs world-wide that fight hunger and disease.
"The standards, certification and accreditation system of the National Nutrition Council when linked to the processes of national agencies and local governments, can assure the poor of nutritious surplus food for their families," Herrera explained. (END)
