This is Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) LtJg Mary Hazel June Obligacion, Executive Officer of Barko ng Republika ng Pilipinas (BRP) Cabra, now anchored in Palawan.
As I stand beside her inside the Navigational Bridge of the BRP Cabra, I remain in awe at how someone who looks so prim commands so much presence, and is carrying an enormous responsibility over her frail but firm shoulders.
She is only in her late 20s, yet as the XO of the 9th MRRV of the PCG, she is the 2nd in command officer on deck in charge of keeping the Captain of the ship even keeled by taking care of all the ship’s work, drills, exercises, personnel organization and the policing and inspection of the mighty vessel.
And it is women like her who inspires, and gives me the courage to push myself to explore my boundaries.
Salute to you, Lt Mary Hazel! Salute to all the empowered women of this government. Mabuhay ang Philippine Coast Guard!
