Ombudsman Leads Philippine Celebration of International Anti-Corruption Day 06 December 2011, Ombudsman Website
The Office of the Ombudsman (OMB) leads this year’s weeklong celebration of the International Anti-Corruption Day.
Highlight of the event will be the signing of a Covenant to Support the National Anti-Corruption Program of Action (NACPA) on December 9, 2011 at the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel in Mandaluyong City.
Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales leads Executive, Legislative and Judiciary leaders in the signing of the said covenant.
Expected to grace the event are Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, House Speaker Feliciano ‘Sonny’ Belmonte, Chief Justice Renato Corona and Executive Sec. Pacquito ‘Jojo’ Ochoa.
The Anti-Graft Office in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) will also be celebrating the 15th Anniversary of the Junior Graftwatch Units (JGUs) with this year’s theme, “Strengthening JGU Volunteerism: Youth In Action Against Corruption.â€
The whole day event will be held on December 8 from 6:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M, starting with the “We Walk Our Talk: Alay Lakad Kontra Korupsiyon†around the Quezon City Circle Bikers Lane.
Multi-Sectoral Anti-Corruption Council (MSACC) and OMB officials and employees together with JGUs officers and advisers from the National Capital Region (NCR) will join the said march.
The JGU program is part of the OMB’s multi-sectoral strategy to enjoin and empower the youth sector in graft prevention and control by encouraging them to establish JGUs in schools and communities.
Through a resolution on December 4, 2000, the United Nations General Assembly recognized that an effective international legal instrument against corruption, independent of the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime was desirable and decided to establish an ad hoc committee for the negotiation of such an instrument in Vienna at the headquarters of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
Thus, on October 31, 2003, the UN General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) and designated December 9 as International Anti-Corruption Day.
The Philippine Senate ratified the UNCAC in November, 2006.
