Established in 1912, the Manila Hotel was one of the most important gathering places of the Filipino and American elite during the Commonwealth period. inspired by California mission-style architecture, it was famous for being the official residence of General Douglas MacArthur, military adviser to the government. It survived World War II and remains the prestige address on Manila Bay.
In 2012, the BSP commemorated the Manila Hotel's 100th anniversary with a 100-Piso New Design Series (NDS) banknote, celebrating the institution's rich history and special role in Philippine society.
