Press Release
Commissioner Vitaliano N Aguirre II, Vice Chairman and Executive Officer of the National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) urged the 220,000-strong Philippine National Police to always strive for “excellence and integrity”.
“Our people’s trust in us, their public servants, should be compensated with our continuous efforts to better ourselves,” Aguirre said.
The newly-appointed NAPOLCOM official was guest of honor and keynote speaker during the 30th PNP Founding Anniversary celebration in Camp Crame.
In his remarks, Aguirre recognized the PNP for perfoming its law enforcement and public safety mandate during “extraordinary times”.
“From the Taal volcano eruption, the spate of devastating typhoons, up to the COVID-19 pandemic, all these have tested our limits, both as a country and as individuals. Yet, in the face of all these challenges, plus the issues of peace and order, we have seen how our police force have have adopted and have shown admirable flexibility, and have even led admirably, amidst the ever changing landscape of the Covid-19 scourge.” Aguirre said.
He said, “the greater challenge ahead of us demands for a police force that is flexible, agile, and adaptable, and can thrive in any volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous situation.”
“This is my vision for our police force. A police force of leaders. DURT leaders. DIRECT, UNDERSTANDABLE, RELIABLE, and TRUSTWORTHY leaders,” he said.
“We need direct and decisive leaders of the police force who can act quickly without any hesitation to the radical changes of our fast-paced world, but always within the bounds of the law. We need leaders of the police force who truly understand the context, depth, and magnitude of our problems. We need leaders of the police force who are reliable and who can adapt to the changing times where everything is interconnected. And more importantly, we need leaders of the police who are trustworthy and can guide us to the right path, with the moral compass never to deviate from such a path.” Aguirre told the PNP.
For his part, PNP Chief, Police General Debold M Sinas said the event is in honor of the 28 PNP members who have succumbed to COVID-19.
“We are not only celebrating the meaningful 30 years journey of the PNP but it is also fitting to pay tribute to our 28 fellow PNP members who unfortunately did not survive the corona virus disease. Let their memories be our inspiration to pursue their interrupted mission to serve our country and people,” the Chief PNP said.
The PNP annually celebrates its founding anniversary to commemorate the establishment of the Philippine National Police in January 29, 1991 pursuant to Republic Act 6975.
Highlighting the 30th PNP Founding Anniversary rites today was a wreath-laying ceremony in Camp Crame led by Aguirre and Sinas at the Bantayog ng mga Bayaning Tagapamayapa, a battle monument of fallen PNP members. They were joined by a representative of the families of police heroes, Mrs. Nova Melad, the widow of the late Police Lieutenant Armand Melad of Parañaque City Police Station who died in a shootout with drug dealers in June last year.
The 30th PNP Founding Anniversary is celebrated with theme “PNP@30: Kakampi mo Laban sa Pandemya, Ilegal na Droga, Kurapsyon at Terorismo.”
