No probe on assets of prosecutors

        The Office of the Ombudsman has not initiated any probe on the supposed non-disclosure of Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net worth (SALN) of the prosecutors in the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona; their spokesmen, as well as the senator-judges of the impeachment court.

        In an Evaluation-Report dated February 1, 2012, Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales approved the recommendation to “close and terminate without prejudice” the request for investigation of Atty. Oliver O. Lozano, since “the suspected or reported ill-gotten wealth and non-disclosure of the Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN) of all the Complainants, Prosecutors, their Spokesmen and Senators in the impeachment case against the Chief Justice”, lack sufficient leads or particulars to enable the taking of further action.

Also included in the recommendation to “close and terminate” was the issue of the filing of a defective impeachment complaint as it appears to be beyond the jurisdiction of the Office of the Ombudsman, and is more properly addressed to the Senate of the Philippines, sitting as an Impeachment Court.

Due to the “absence of the necessary and essential particulars which will support the conduct of an inquiry”, the issue of “the suspected and reported bribery of the complainants” was also “closed and terminated”.
