Did you know that the Philippine Tarsier regarded as the smallest monkey is found in Bohol, in the smallest town of Corella, in the smallest barangay of Canapnapan. It is about a size of a human fist. It feeds on insects, grasshopper, dragonflies and other crawling animals on barks of trees. It is a nocturnal animal that sleeps during the day and hunts food at night. Corella though the smallest town of Bohol becomes  now a tourist spot because of this rare animal.

Many people from Corella Bohol migrated to Mindanao in search for greener pasture. Our town is growing to  become a virgin forest. Farmers planted gmelinas instead of fruits and crops. Rice and cornland becomes herby and grassy. Because of the abnormal weather condition, farming is not anymore productive.Monkeys , snakes, tarsiers and other birds are growing densely in the forest. How is our town looks 20 years from now??? Because of tarsier  conservation, time will come that  there will be more Philippine tarsier than people in this town.

The Philippine Tarsier Foundation in Canapnapan, Corella is located in a 7.4 hectare of sanctuary or forest reservation. Visitors can see tarsiers in its natural habitat. This promotes tourism in Corella and the province of Bohol. When I was still young, I caught a full-grown tarsier. I placed  it in a bamboo cage. The animal smashed its head on the wall of the cage in a bid to escape until its skull cracked and died. Therefore, this animal can not be raised   as pet. Before, this animals were mainly hunted  to be made into stuffed toy for wall decor.
We invite you to see the Philippine tarsier in Corella .

                     THE TARSIER
                      by: fdaray

               Of all the rare animal
               I ever did see.
               The tarsier is the rarest
               By part to me.

               For all day long
It sleeps on a branch of a tree.
               And when the night comes
               It hunts and eats  prey.

By April this year i will have a vacation to my home barangay canangca-an. It is 3 km. away from the tarsier foundation. I will have more personal observation  to the Philippine  tarsier. I can write more  and have more views in their natural habitat.

The Philippine Tarsier
IJsselstein, Saturday, 24 April 2004 02:23:48

The Philippine tarsier, (Tarsius syrichta) is very peculiar small animal. In fact it is one of the smallest known primates, no larger than a adult men's hand. Mostly active at night, it lives on a diet of insects. Folk traditions sometimes has it that tarsiers eat charcoal, but actually they retrieve the insects from (sometimes burned) wood. It can be found in the islands of Samar, Leyte, Bohol, and Mindanao in the Philippines.

If no action is taken, the tarsier might not survive. Although it is a protected species, and the practice of catching them and then selling them as stuffed tarsiers to tourists has stopped, the species is still threatened by the destruction of his natural forest habitat. Many years of both legal and illegal logging and slash-and-burn agriculture have greatly reduced these forests, and reduced the tarsier population to a dangerously small size. If no action is taken now, the Philippine tarsier can soon be added to the list of extinct species.

Not "The World Smallest Monkey"
"The world's smallest monkey" is an often heard slogan. However, it is not a monkey. In truth, its classification is somewhat problematic. Some scienties consider tarsiers to be a taxonomic suborder among the primates. While, because they are closely related to lemurs, lorises and bushbabies, others classify them with the prosimians to which these animals belong. Monkeys and apes belong to the suborder of anthropoids. The complete taxonomic classification thus is:

Class  Mammalia
Order  Primates
Suborder  Prosimii/Haplorrhini
Infraorder  Tarsiiformes
Superfamily  Tarsioidea

Philippine Tarsier

More Articles

In many respects, the Philippine tarsier is different from other animals. Considered as the world's smallest primate, it measures only about twelve centimeters in length. Its two big eyes cannot move and do not have a tapetum - the upper protective tissue. Because of this, the Philippine tarsier has learned to turn its head 180 degrees. It has also two grooming claws on each foot and an almost bald tail extending about nine inches.

Found in the islands of Samar, Leyte, Bohol and Mindanao, the Philippine tarsier got its name from its elongated tarsus bone. An ordinary tarsier has a gray or brown pelage and weighs between 117 and 134 grams.

The Philippine tarsier lives mainly on insects. It clings on small shafts of trees, some two meters from the ground. Its strong slender legs enable the Philippine tarsier to leap to the ground in haste and catch its prey. It is able to move between trees by leaping as far as three meters. It also has keen senses of hearing and sight.

In the 1960's, the Philippine tarsiers freely roamed in dense patches of bushes, tall grasses, bamboos and small trees in tropical forest. They were said to be a common sight on the highway that cuts through the forested hill of Corella town in Bohol. But poachers and hunters caught thousands of tarsiers for pets. The tarsiers are reportedly popular pets in Mexico.

The Philippine tarsier, however, is known to be a solitary animal, which values its freedom and privacy. It rarely lives long in captivity. It has been reported that some tarsiers were so traumatized by captivity that they committed suicide by beating their heads against the cages.

Aside from hunters, the dwindling of Philippine forests poses a grave threat to the survival of the Philippine tarsier. Today, there are only about 1,000 tarsiers inhabiting the wilds of Corella town in Bohol province where the biggest concentration of these rare animals was once reported.

Ensuring the continued existence of the Philippine tarsiers is the Philippine Tarsier Foundation Inc., which has launched several projects in Bohol. However, the organization which is based in Tagbilaran City, needs additional funds to pursue the projects and give the next generation of Filipinos a chance to see this exotic animal, which by the way, is found only in the Philippines.
