How old is your oldest living lolo or lola in Bohol?
« on: September 15, 2007, 01:55:41 PM »
Long life is generally equated to good quality of life.

According to Mike's earlier thread, Boholano's life expectancy at birth as of the period 2000 to 2005 is 68.19 for males and 72.93 for females which is slightly higher than the Philippine national average for the same period at 67.03 for males and 72.92 for females.

Would you believe that the Japanese live almost a decade longer than Filipinos with life expectancy of 77.86 for males and 84.61 for females!

In most places in the world, women consistently outlive men! Can anyone explain?

The oldest man on earth is a Japanese, Tomoji Tanabe, who will turn 112 on Tuesday. The oldest woman is also a Japanese,Tsuneyo Toyonaga, who is 113. (Again, the woman is older by a year.)

The latest statistics in Japan is that there will be more than 30,000 centenarians or people over 100 years of age by end of October this year.

Most of the Japanese centenarians live in Okinawa, a cluster of islands in the south with a climate and an environment that resembles ours-I imagine perhaps closest to Bohol.

So let's check if life is kinder and gentler to Boholanos. How old is the oldest living relative or neighbor that you know?

The mother of my lola died at 96 or 94. She hailed from Inabanga.

My dear Lolo Ciano is 81 years old and very much alive and strong and is from Valencia, Bohol. He's much a fighter and strong spirited, that is where i get it from, and i know Lolo will live much longer. I pray God to keep him strong and in good health. He is my only Lolo left...
When i finish schooling---i will provide care for him myself, and make sure he lives up to 100 y/o, if the Lord is willing.

My father, who has been living in the US with my mom since 5 years ago, is presently 76, if my memory serves me right.

I consider this an achievement for him since I've always known him as a chain-smoker and an intemperate drinker. The youngest of 12, his older brothers have lived comfortably well beyond 80. The brother next to him re-married after he was widowed and even in his mid-70s, begot two or three children with his very young wife.

Mr Benelynne,

What do you think could be a factor why the life expectancy of Boholanos is slightly higher than the rest of the country?

Could it be the diet? the lifestyle? the genes?

Fresher air, low animal-fat and more seafood-based diet, less stressful life, lower criminality (until recently), active sex life (our population growth is also higher than average)...???

I guess our roaming encyclopedia Lorenzo could explain this better. Note, however, that the difference with the national average is so slight as to be statistically insignificant.

The lifestyle of Okinawans is more noteworthy. The whole world is gawking at them for such an amazing long life. Many scientists say it's the diet--which is rich in tofu (bean curd or tokwa o taho ba ni sa ato?), ampalaya, and a host of other veggies. In short, food rich in antioxidants. Maybe low-carb, protein-based diet rich in seafood like the Boholanos'. And of course it's the lower amount of environmental pollution, the laid back life with less stress, and almost zero criminality.

So we have our first Boholana centenarian on record here at TB. I wonder if anyone knows of a living centenarian.

ms da binsi,

tinuod jud na...growing up in Bohol, kami sa akong lola, isda ug gulay jud among pagkaon every day.

Sunday was our special day. On that day, we eat pork, chicken, or beef. And then, we drink coke.

Hehehe! Mao to I always looked forward to Sundays.

But it's true what you said about Omega 3 and fish oil. There's a recent study showing that fish oil can significantly enhance the effect of antidepressants. Mao karon, some doctors recommend nga mo take fish oil for their patients on antidepressants.

Supposedly, very rich man daw na in antioxidants, important in preventing certain cancers.

Let's ask dodong for a more detailed explanation.

 :)

Akong Lola Rosaria from Lawis,Pangangan,Calape I think she is almost 100.Not sure ko sa iya edad but I know hapit na siya mag 100.I always love listening to her story about the cholera plague in Bohol where na orphane siya ug iya usa ka igsoon laki.According to her iya daw amahan naglubong sa iya inahan pagkaugma namatay iya amahan.Really sad story but full of hope. She is only 4 I beleive when her mom and dad died. One couple adopted 13 children nga na orphan ug isa na siya adtong 13 apil iya igsoon laki.

I never met my grandparents from my mother's side, while on my father's  side, only the granddad I met, but now he's dead.

I don't know how old were they when they died.
