Boholano / Bisaya Language
« on: December 17, 2007, 02:42:08 PM »
Discussions about the concept, the characteristics, the sentence, the vocabulary, the grammar and the evolution of Boholano and Binisaya here in this thread and also learn words that seemed to have been buried due to fast Westernization of our languages in the Philippines.

So, post away na mga Sano ug mga Sana! Para, banhawon nato ang atong pinolungan!!  ;D

Quote:
Boholano is a dialect of Cebuano that is spoken on the island of Bohol  in the Philippines. It is sometimes described as a separate language.
Boholano, especially the dialects used in Central Bohol, can be distinguished from other Cebuano dialects by a few phonetic changes. The "y" sound in Cebuano becomes "j" ("iya" in Cebuano becomes "ija"), the "k" sound sometimes becomes "h" ("ako" in Cebuano becomes "aho") the "l" sound sometimes if it is used in the second or following syllable becomes "w" ("kulang" in Cebuano becomes "kuwang").
The dialects used in the coastal areas of Bohol though, including Tagbilaran City, are almost indistinguishable from other Cebuano-speaking areas.

Basin tubig nga pinagahi ahehe

Sa tinuod, walay Binisaya sa Ice kay wala may snow sa atoa.

Duha ra akong nahibaw-an nga binisaya sa Ice, sa binuang nga paagi:
1. Ice: Bahaw na kaayo nga tubig (di ba ang bahaw bugnaw?)
2. Ice: Tubig (Loon Accent). (diba gahi ang accent sa Loon, unya gahi pod ang ice).

Another Cebuano - Boholano vocabulary:
Cebuano = Ambot (I don’t know)
Bohol = Baw
Ubujan = Inay

Sagde Sir Daray, akong teman-an nga dele mo gamet ug "i" og "u".

Ako betaw ne namatekdan kadtong akong ge estodyohan ang alphabet sa kenaraang benesaya, wala ko ka keta og "i" og "u".

Dogang ane nga ponto, ang pyor nga benesaya pareha ra ang elang letter "D" og "R". Example: "Kanemo ra", ang oban mo engon "Kanemo da".

Apan akong gekalebogan sa pyor nga benesaya, walay letra nga "j". Ngano nga sa Bohol mo gamet man ta ug "j".

Henaot kensa ang mga bated, mo hatag og lamdag ane nga ponto.

Ang mga Bol-anon mahilig ug mga expressions:

simbako ka, jesusmariajosep, bahala ka, peste ka ,
jati ra, ajaw intawon, wa ka kujapi  ug uban pa.

These are thoughtless but sometimes meaningful.

para nako bisan ug unsa pa ang mga letra ang importante kanang makasabot kitang tanan sa atong pagka Bol-anon.

I´m proud to be a Bol-anon ! Bisan ug asa ka paingon sa kalibutan naa man bol-anon kanunay, just like her in germany daghan man kaayo ang taga atoa ug malipayon usab ko kung magkita kami ug bisan sa telepono ay feel ko ang pagiging bol-anon kapag kaestorya nako sila.  Remain Bol-anon...

Bag-o na kong tubo mao nga maglisod ko pagtugkad nga ang Binol-anon tulo ra ang vowel: "a", "e" ug "o".

Maayo lang siguro kung sulti lang. Pero kung sinulat na, makalibog.

Boholano is a dialect of Cebuano that is spoken on the island of Bohol in the Philippines, which is a Visayan speech variety, although it is sometimes described as a separate language. Boholano, especially the dialects used in Central Bohol, can be distinguished from other Cebuano dialects by a few phonetic changes. The "y" sound in Cebuano becomes "j" ("iya" in Cebuano becomes "ija"), the "k" sound sometimes becomes "h" ("ako" in Cebuano becomes "aho")the "l" sound sometimes if it is used in the second or following syllable becomes "w" ("kulang" in Cebuano becomes "kuwang"). The dialects used in the coastal areas of Bohol though, including Tagbilaran City, are almost indistinguishable from other Cebuano-speaking areas

In the following examples, pronounce the letter "U" as it is pronounced in the word "church". This is most common in Alicia, Maribojoc, Antequera, San Miguel, Loon, Danao, etc.

In some parts of Bohol, the letter “r” is replaced with “d” when it is found “inside” the word. Examples: iding, ido, kadaU-kadaU, kaliding, UdUy.

“Naku, naku, naku . . . mahuhulog ang bata!” / Binul-anUn: “AU, aU, aU . . . mahu’ug ang bata!” / Ay, ay ay . . . mahulog ang bata!”

“Naku, ang pangit naman niyan.” / Binul-aNun: “AU, maUta pUd ana.” / SinugbuanUn: “Ay, kamaot pod ana.”

“Sabi pupunta ka, hindi ka raw dumating.  / Binul-anUn: BUk rag moadto ka, wa man kuno ka moabut. “ / SinugbuanUn: “Ingon moadto ka, wala man kuno ka moabot.”

The word “bUk” is unique to Binul-anUn.

Binul-anon is a level above a dialect.  In fact it is a variety of the Sinugbuanon language. That is why Boholanos always use the Sinugbuanon in public speech, letters, literary arts, etc.  Even in drama or stage plays, Sinugbuanon gyud ang gigamit nato sa Bohol, except usahay kon naay mga comic characters.  In most parts of Bohol, the vowels used are "i" and "u".  This is the case for all towns north of Tagbilaran up to the northeast, as well as almost all central towns.  The "o" and "e" are common in Panglao, Dauis, and almost all southern towns up to the southeastern part of the province. There are words unique to Bohol, like those already mentioned. Other examples: himi, danggay, ituk, gunja, iti (to dry up) etc.  "Gunja" cannot be "Cebuanized" into "gunya". Similarly, "jamo" should not be "yamo", because "jamo" is "jamo", whose Arabic origin means total or absolute. Other peculiarities: 1) a "y" that ends a word becomes "j" if a suffix is appended to the word (latay / latajan). This, however is more pronounced in Southern Leyte (mas daghan ilang "j" kay sa molupyo sa Bohol. Examples in Southern Leyte: nanay / nanaja; baboy/ baboja; kahoy / kahoja. 2) an "l" that ends a word becomes a "w" (kasal / kasaw; tubol / tubow; kural / kuraw; habol / habow); 3) if the "l" is straddled between two "o" or "u", it is lost in the pronunciation (Dipolog / Dipo'og; nahulog / nahu'og; tulo / tu'o (three or drip); padulong / padu'ong; gipamulong / gipamu'ong = to speak or utter. 4) However, in Maribojoc, Loon, Antequera, San Miguel, Sta. Fe (Danao), etc., if this word is pronounced "gipamUng", with the "U" as in "church", the word will now mean "looking for something".  5) Did you know that in Dimiao, instead of saying "Para asa man ni?" (What is this for?), they utter "Asa man ni para?" Morag nagsakay no? Well, sakto tingali sila kay sa ininglis nauwahi man pud ang "for". 6) In Dauis, note that sometimes they do not use prepositions or identifiers "Adto ko (sa) inyo". "Wala (si) Nanay diri".  During the pre-Spanish period, Dauis used to be a business center for some Chinese traders. In dealing with them, the locals had to use shortcuts. This practice stuck. 7) In Dauis, Panglao and some southern towns, the syllable is actually pronounced like, in "gakaWO, taWO, baWO, etc.

In our research on the Boholano language, the vowels "i" and "u", rather than "e" and "o", are more frequently used in most parts of Bohol. The "e" and "o' are more common among Boholanos on the southwest  up to the southeast part of the province.

Do we say, "Gedele ang paghekot sa kandeng denheng dapeta."? Funny, di ba? But this is quite common in southwestern up to the southeastern rim of Bohol. The majority of Bol-anons, however, would say, "Gidili ang hikut sa kanding dinhing dapita."

Bad,

I agree with you that the Boholano dialect is a separate dialect not only from the Cebuhanos, but also from the Warays, Ilonggo or the Hiligaynon. What I mean here is; When the Philippine islands came into being by volcanic eruption diverse people from mainland Asia had a heyday populating each piece of land that sprouted from the sea. In other words the flood of migration to the Philippines [Of course before it was not yet called the Philippines.] was in drove of tribespeople. Each has its own ethnic dialect. I believe the word Vijayan refers to the Boholanos. The Boholano dialect with its "J" accent is having similarity with some Indonesian dialect. There are many Indonesian dialect that are prominent with the "J" accent and with only a bit of difference to the Malay accent.

Ang atong weakness sa Pilipinas nga gamay ra ang nag-utingkay bahin sa atong gigikanan. Philippine historians want to research our history in Italy and Madrid as if our ancestors came from these places.

hehehe! kahinumdom ko.

adunay 3 years old nga bata nga nipuyo sa amo-ang balay sa manila sauna. tungod kay bisaya iyang mama ug tagalog ang mga tao nga iyang kaistorya, nagsagol na intawn iyang sinultian. ingon siya,

"Ate Vida, Ajusin mo 'to." with matching taga-este intonation and pronunciation.

hehehe! it was cute and funny.
