KABAYAN SOLON PRODS DFA MAKE SURE KILLER OF OFW IN KUWAIT IS PROSECUTED
"Our government must provide effective legal representation for the family of the domestic helper against the murderous employer in Kuwait. DFA should employ legal experts to pursue the case and ensure prosecution of the suspect," said KABAYAN Party-list Rep. Ron P. Salo, one of the authors of HB 5832 creating the Department of Filipinos Overseas and Foreign Employment.
HB 5832 provides P5 billion to the Assistance to Nationals (ATN) Fund for assistance, including legal aid, to Filipinos Overseas in distress situations.
Salo asked the “DFA to engage a battery of lawyers and ensure appropriate legal representation in all jurisdictions where there are OFWs, giving priorities to areas where there is high incidence of violence against OFWs."
"Moving forward, DOLE must develop new markets in jurisdictions where there is high respect for human rights and where our OFWs, particularly our domestic helpers, will be treated with respect and dignity. Train domestic helpers for other skills so they won’t have to work as DH where they are more prone to abuse, or worse, death," he added.
"Long-term, more job opportunities must be created in the country so Filipinos don’t have to work abroad," Salo added. (END)
