He was worse than Marcos, 'te.
His policies were brutal, he had over 200,000 political dissidents executed by a mere nodd of his head. With his hand, he crushed the rebellion in Irian Jaya, and single handedly wiped out the insurrectionists in Sumatra as well as in Balimbang. Like Marcos, he was removed from government by a pro-democracy movement, and like Marcos, even after his absence from political life, his name, like Marcos, still brings many contemporaries to fear. The word 'Suharto' sends cold chills down the spines of politicians in Jakarta. Despite this, most of his laws and edicts are still in use in Indonesia, only few were revoked, such as the military role in politics.
Even in our own Philippines, the same laws that Marcos proclaimed into action are still enforced, that is the legacy of Marcos. Marcos, like Suharto, had a dream of a unified nation and in their minds, it was through swift force, and through a legalism concept that laws were to be followed.
Suharto is hated, yet he is loved. He represented the worst and the best of the Indonesian.
The same way as Marcos is to the Filipino.
Bitaw, Ate, Suharto was indeed corrupt. Perhaps it is better than these so called dictators are no longer in the political life.
