The Municipality of Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte, has been placed under the state of calamity as thousands have been displaced as almost the whole municipality has been inundated by flood.
Siocon Mayor Cesar Soriano said the declaration was issued at 1 p.m. Monday as almost all of the town’s barangays had been flooded since Sunday.
Siocon comprises of 26 barangays and is a second class municipality in the province of Zamboanga del Norte.
The municipality has a population of 32,699 people in 5,942 households based on the census conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO) in 2000.
Soriano disclosed the flood hit the town when the Lituban River overflowed brought about by the continuous heavy downpour.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA) said that the heavy downpour was spawned by the southwest monsoon and enhanced by Tropical Storm Lawin.
“In some areas the water is up to chest deep while it is knee deep up to waist deep in other areas of the town,†Soriano said.
He disclosed that at least 4,000 families with some 20,000 dependents have been displaced by the flood.
He said that 800 families of the 4,000 families have evacuated to the town’s cultural center, churches and schools.
A total of 180 houses were damaged including 40 that were washed away near the river banks, he disclosed.
