ILOILO CITY -- The Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) is looking forward to producing graduates from the two-day youth camp that will gather some 50 violators of this city’s curfew ordinance.
Senior Insp. Shella Mae Sangrines, ICPO spokesperson, said Thursday they had partnered with the Goducate Camp and Training Center in San Miguel, Iloilo for the conduct of Project BONG (Bringing Order to the Nemesis of Gangs) youth camp that would commence on Friday.
She said the activity was initiated by the ICPO after a series of incidents involving gangs in the city.
She disclosed that 34 incidents were recorded from 2016 to 2017, with physical injuries leading the list of violations with 18. Others were frustrated murder and child abuse.
Sangrines explained that the Philippine National Police (PNP) could not address the problem alone because the perpetrators are not considered as hardened criminals but victims of circumstances.
Through their advisory council, they crafted the project to help youths cope with stressors, she added.
This batch, however, was not involved in criminal incidents but were violators of the curfew ordinance that prohibits minors from loitering from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.
During the youth camp, they will be guided on how to engage in worthwhile activities rather than violence, learn how to cope with the demands of their environment, and be given an opportunity to become productive members of society, she explained.
Representatives of the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), and personnel of the Women and Children Protection Desks (WCPD) will also join the activity.
Sangrines added that the activity does not end in the youth camp, as they would still keep in touch with the participants and even make them force multipliers in sharing information on incidents involving children. (PNA)
