MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – The Sandiganbayan has granted the motion of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to defer her arraignment for plunder charges. The charges stem from the alleged misuse of P366 million in Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office funds.
The court said the arraignment of Mrs. Arroyo and former PCSO chairman Manoling Morato will be held on October 29.
Arroyo’s lawyers are asking the Sandiganbayan to allow the former President to be detained at the hospital. They are also asking the Supreme Court to issue a temporary restraining order on the case.
State prosecutors have withdrawn their objections for Mrs. Arroyo's hospital arrest.
Mrs. Arroyo was confined at the Veterans’ Memorial Medical Center due to a heart problem.
Doctors said Mrs. Arroyo needs constant monitoring and still has to undergo a number of tests.
