ILOILO CITY -- Western Visayas has posted a high compliance to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) order mandating safety and health measures for employees who need to be on their feet due to the nature of their work.
DOLE-6 Regional Director Johnson Cañete on Friday said 71 retail service establishments within malls and supermarkets and hotels and restaurants were inspected on September 25, three days after the order dubbed “Safety and Health Measures for Workers Who By Nature of their Work Have to Stand at Work” or DOLE Department Order No. 178, series of 2017 took effect.
Their assessment showed that 69 of the 71 establishments or 97.18 percent observed rest periods, 56 or 78.8 percent provide readily accessible seats and 51 or 71.9 percent have employees wear comfortable footwear.
“This is an ongoing assessment to be made,” he said as those establishments that are yet to implement measures “have signified their commitment to do so as soon as possible.”
The law was signed by DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello on August 25, 2017.
Cañete clarified that not all establishments are covered by the order. He explained that the order was aimed at addressing occupational safety issues and concerns related to the wearing of high-heeled shoes and standing for long periods or frequent walking.
They included retail and/or service employees, assembly line workers, teachers and security personnel. (PNA)
