DAVAO CITY, Aug. 11 -- Senator Cynthia Villar will push for the inclusion of “Gulayan” to the program handled by the Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) to combat malnutrition.
Villar, who chairs the senate committee on agriculture and food, said malnutrition and hunger is a prevalent and persistent issue in the country which needs to be addressed.
“I know that the Department of Education (DepEd) and Department of Agriculture (DA) has a school-based feeding program to address undernutrition and short-term hunger among public school children. We can expand the program not only in schools but also to our respective barangays,” Villar added.
She underscored that the “Gulayan Program” as a source of ingredients for the feeding program and it would encourage families to put up their own garden at home to ensure continuous nutritional improvement of the students.
Furthermore, Villar also said that she will also focus on the “Gulayan sa Paaralan Program(GPP)”. “Sa Senado, isinusulong ko na paigtingin sa GPP, dahil sa pamamagitan ng programa, we are hitting two birds with one stone. We are providing proper nutrition and at the same time, we are making farmers out of our students. Nai-expose sila sa farming early in their lives, which is very important, lalo pa at tumatanda na ang mga Filipino farmers,” Villar added.
As the guest speaker of the 4th National Conference of BNS here, Villar said, “We are thankful that BNS’s are really devoted and dedicated in improving the nutritional status of families in the barangays. And this annual conference is really a good venue for all the stakeholders in the areas of health and nutrition to come together to discuss programs and projects that will lead to a healthier Filipino citizenry.” (Cherry Mae Palicte/PNA)
