Villagers flee as troops hunt down NPA rebels
« on: April 22, 2008, 07:53:54 PM »
DAVAO CITY, Philippines -- Hundreds of tribal families are fleeing their communities for fear of getting caught in the crossfire as government soldiers stepped up the hunt for communist guerrillas who camps were discovered recently.

Evacuees reported that a nine-month-old infant of the Mandaya tribe, Romilyn Cayan, died at an evacuation center where her family sought refuge after fleeing their hinterland village in New Bataan town, Compostela Valley.

But officials in the province said they have not heard of the baby’s death.

The military, on the other hand, while professing no knowledge of the evacuation, claimed any exodus from the hinterlands would have been instigated by the New People’s Army (NPA) to force government forces to cease their operations.

On April 7 and 8, the military began pounding the boundaries of three towns -- New Bataan and Compostela in Compostela Valley, and Baganga in Davao Oriental -- following the discovery of six NPA camps in the area.

The Cayan family, with about 300 other residents of their village, fled to the center of New Bataan or to villages they deemed safe, most of them walking barefoot for an hour to Purok (sub-village) 1, about 150 meters from a gymnasium and town hall that soldiers are now using as a base of operations.

Mariro Poquita, chairman of the Concerned Citizen for People's Rights (CCPR), said Romilyn was very weak when her family arrived in the town center. The infant’s fever went up but the town has no hospital where she could be rushed for treatment.

However, Lucrecia Limen Polinar, municipal information officer, said health officials have not monitored the infant’s death.

Poquita said other children have also contracted diseases, a situation made worse by the lack of food.

Evacuation has also been reported in Sitio Quarry in Barangay Ngan and Sitio Spur Dos in Barangay Taytayan in Compostela.

But Lieutenant Colonel Rolando Bautista, spokesman of the 10th Infantry Division, claimed the military is unaware of the evacuation of hundreds of families, but added that if this was true, it would have been "instigated by the NPA to pressure the military to pull out our forces."

"I think evacuation is very impossible considering that the troops are now in areas where there are no residents … " Bautista said.

He said the military has received reports ranking communist leaders are in the vicinity.

Sitio Quarry, according to a resident, has now become a "ghost town."

Regino Lazola, 54, said in Spur Dos, soldiers set up camp in an elementary school and a Protestant church. Lazola, chair of the Quarry Farmers Association, said the troops arrived in his village and questioned him about NPA members.

"They threatened to kill me because they said I was lying," he said. "One of them also said that if ever they monitor NPA members in our village, they will crush it [village] using cannons."

Your welcome Beth, unsaon nga nitumaw man ning maong grupo unya naa man silay lig-ong prinsipyu nga gihuptan, they even sacrifice their own lives  too, kay sa ilang pagsalmot sa armadong kusog dugo og singot ang ilang gibuhis og anytime kinabuhi nila ang makalas panahon sa encounter.  They are not satisfied on the present existing system so thats why they are fighting hard in order to build a new one that will totally serve the interest of the people and not only for the few..

Ang problem in this is that communism is a failed system. Human nature trumps the concept of the utopianism offered in communism.

Additionally, the religiosity of Filipinos will clash with the state-aethiesm of communism.

To me, the NPA is nothing more than a rag-tag group of non-conformists. Terrorists. Insurrectionists.

We cant blame them why they exist coz they think that they can build a better system more that what we have today. But i think whatever system may exist, still people are not satisfied and its just hard to find a perfect system that will totally fit the needs and demands of the  people.

Case in point. In the end, the only opposition we have to achieving patrimony is ourselves. Corrupt officials and politicians that deviate from the present course; in order to fill their own pockets.

Though I do not accept NPAs and the like, I can sympathize for them and their deluded supporters. Theirs is a tale of desperation. Government will not hear them nor are they willing to compromise. Thus there are clashes.

The same scenario is seen with Muslim extremists in the south. Despite their ideological differences, muslims extremists and NPA rebels are all in the same fold. Terrorists and insurrectionists.

They would doom the entire republic, if given the choice, for their own selfish goals. Sacrifice the many for the few.

Alas, human ideologue is self destructive, isn't it?

I think Muslim and the NPA's are not totally the same, only that both of them form a group in order to protest against the government but they have different ideologist and principles.

And speaking of terrorism i think i disagree on the term calling them as a terrorist because  first of all, the meaning of terrorism is harming the people in order to wreak havoc, coerce and intimidate them.

And the Communist Party and the revolutionary movement in the Philippines have the New People's Army (NPA) which is a revolutionary army of the people. It was established to confront and destroy the reactionary Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) which are instruments of the ruling class to supress the revolutionary movement and the people who could not be coerced into following the wishes of the reactionaries.

The New People's Army has already been tested by the people in the last three decades as a revolutionary organization, as their very own army, and as their partner in their daily struggles not only in the military aspect, but in their livelihood struggle, in raising their level of education, literacy and culture, in developing other fields, and in self-governance. It is strictly forbidden to harm the people that they serve even in the slightest way. Thus, the NPA cannot become terrorist, especially the CPP that firmly leads and guides it.

And yet on their struggle daghang kinabuhi ang makalas but then its part of their beliefs that in changing a particular system  dugo og singot ang puhunan, bisan kinabuhi man tuod nila ang makalas but yeah they consider them as  martyr of the the revolution..

Noted, Ms. Bulak.

A very interesting read. My view on this matter is conservative-leaning.

Yeah and i cant blame you of having that conservative type of view, and i cant assure myself too which among of them would i prefer, its just a matter of two line struggle whether being conservative type or liberal. But nice to open up our mind and remain positive and eager to listen among the ideas of other people.
