Village chief nabbed for constituent’s slay

COTABATO CITY -- Police in Maguindanao arrested on Thursday a village chair for shooting to death a constituent over still unknown reasons.

Senior Inspector Razul Pandulo, chief of Pagalungan Municipal Police Station, identified the victim as Rasul Padidis, 26, farmer and resident of Barangay Poblacion, Pagalungan and the suspect as Farouk Matalam, chair of Barangay Poblacion.

Pandulo said residents of sitio Titkayan, Barangay Poblacion alerted the police about the crime. Backed by military personnel, the Pagalungan police responded and proceeded to the site.

Residents said they last saw Matalam and Padidis in heated argument shortly before the incident.

At the village official’s home, police found 37 empty shells for M-16 rifle the suspect used against Padidis.

Pandulo said Matalam did not resist arrest and is now detained at Pagalungan PNP lock-up cell.

The town police official said investigation is on-going to determine what motivated the village official to kill the victim. Probers are also verifying if Matalam’s M-16 rifle was licensed. (PNA)
