The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday vehemently denied allegations made by Lauro Vizconde that an incumbent associate justice is trying to influence his colleagues to come out with a ruling favorable to Hubert Webb, one of the individuals convicted in the sensational rape-massacre case.
SC spokesperson Atty. Jose Midas Marquez made the statement after Vizconde publicly identified Associate Justice Antonio Carpio in a radio program as the magistrate allegedly lobbying in favor of Webb, who is presently seeking for reopening and retrial of the 19-year-old case.
Marquez called on Vizconde and all parties concerned to refrain from issuing baseless assertions.
â€The case is about to be resolved anytime now. So we call on the parties to refrain from issuing unsubstantiated claims," the SC spokesperson stressed.
While not recommending it, Marquez pointed out that Vizconde can bring his concerns against Carpio before the SC Ethics Committee.
"He is free to do whatever he wants to do. While we sympathize with him, any allegations brought out should be substantiated," Marquez added.
Marquez said it is unthinkable for Carpio to influence his fellow justices because in the first place, Carpio already inhibited himself from the celebrated case since it was brought to the SC En Banc several years ago.
"We don’t want to dignify this issue. This is just pure speculation. In fact, he (Carpio) already inhibited (himself from the case)," Marquez concluded. (PNA)
