ILOILO CITY -- Iloilo City was selected by the United Nations (UN) Habitat as pilot site for its clean air initiative project in the Philippines.

“We were told that it is only in Iloilo City that they are going to put a project on this aspect in the Philippines,” said city planning and development coordinator Jose Roni Peñalosa on Friday.

Peñalosa said what the proponent is trying to do “is build on the existing initiatives of the city as regard clean air.”

Robert Kehew, unit leader of the Climate Change Planning Unit, Urban Planning and Design Branch of the United Nations Human Settlements Program; and Country Director Cris Rollo met with officers of city government offices on Monday.

They were briefed by city environment and natural resources officer Noel Hechanova about the green house inventory project of Iloilo City in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the emission assessment undertaken years back in partnership with the German International Cooperation (GIZ).

Peñalosa said they have heard of the various environmental efforts of the city, the reason they chose to pilot the project in Iloilo City.

Last year, UN Habitat has assisted Iloilo City in the Plan City Extension project for the design concept of upper Jaro. This project tries to apply and adopt the principle of livability and sustainability that was advocated by UN Habitat.

The agency also worked with the city government on the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and vulnerability and adaptation assessment for this locality.

“They knew how we work. They knew how involved our citizens are. They knew how participatory our approach is and they knew how the leadership ably supports initiatives like this. With that good track record, UN Habitat is here again to lend a helping hand for other needs of the city,” he said.

In a discussion Wednesday afternoon with the city environment and natural resources office (CENRO) and the city planning and development office (CPDO) , the initial plan was to come up with an urban air quality project.

The project maybe beneficial should the city decide to come up with “policy reforms as regard emission from point sources and mobile sources,” Peñalosa added. (PNA)
