NEW YORK — United Nations secretary general Ban Ki-Moon will visit Manila on October 29 to attend an international conference on migration, a Philippine government official said Sunday. Foreign affairs undersecretary Esteban Conejos said Ban will give a speech before the second Global Forum on Migration and Development, a four-day forum to discuss ways to improve the benefits and working conditions for migrant labor.

Representatives from more than 190 U.N. member countries were expected to attend the meeting, Conejos added. Migrant workers are a major pillar of the Philippines’ domestic economy, with nearly 10 percent of the country’s population working abroad and sending remittances home.  “We expect to reach a consensus with countries hosting Filipino workers for better treatment of overseas Filipino workers,” Conejos said in Manila. — AFP
