CEBU CITY, August 8 -- The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) is lacking funds for the improvement of its training facilities and to buy new tools and equipmnent, its regional officer said on Tuesday.
At a forum hosted by the Association of Government Information Officers and the Philippine Information Agency on Tuesday, TESDA-7 Training Center administrator Engr. Winnie Salas said TESDA was created to help our unemployed millennials land a stable job, but it also needs funds to do so.
“We train our students to be able to enhance their skills, but to capacitate their training system we need funds also,” Salas said. "Hopefully, next year there will be funds for training facilities improvement."
Salas said the TESDA Training Center building is almost 40 years old and has yet to undergo any maintenance.
“The building needs to be renovated. It looks very old, most especially now that it is being surrounded by tall buildings. A training center should be at least two-three storeys high,” said Madelina Salarda, chief of TESDA-7 Regional Operations Divisions.
Salas said some tools and equipment are defective and they are trying their best to buy new ones to provide good training to the trainees despite the lack of funds.
The TESDA-7 is also trying their best to provide their trainees a high level of education program to give them a chance for promotion when they work. "Good thing was 65% of TESDA graduates landed a job after they graduated and it’s a privilege for us to teach them," Salas said.
Meanwhile, Salas said the Visayan Electronic Company (VECO) has been TESDA-7’s active partner. VECO has been supporting their programs, supplying them materials and providing allowances for their trainees, who can eventually work as linemen for VECO after their training.
