Parents of suicide victim to file case vs. Cebu school
« on: May 11, 2020, 08:53:17 AM »
CEBU CITY -- The parents of Jona Mae Villarin, who committed suicide Thursday afternoon by jumping off the 7th Floor of the Asian College of Technology (ACT) building, are going to file a case against the school administration.

"We will file a case against them (ACT admin) because of their statement that my daughter was being physically, mentally and psychologically abused by us,” Villarin’s grieving mother, who asked not to be named, said at the wake Friday.

“You can see in her skin that there's no sign of her being abused. Maybe she had a problem or maybe she also had friends who are a bad influence to her," the mother tearfully continued.

She said they didn’t even know about Jona Mae’s previous attempts, such as ingesting a lot of paracetamol  and antibiotic tablets at one time, as the 17-year-old student didn’t show signs of depression nor she acted unusual the past few days in their house.

Villarin's mother revealed that she went to the school two hours before the incident at the invitation of ACT guidance counsellor Marcus Agonia Jr.

Agonia reportedly called her and recommended that she take her daughter to a psychologist.

However, when Villarin learned that her mother was summoned to the school, she asked to go to the comfort room where she slipped out of the window and jumped around past 4:00 p.m. Thursday.

"They told me that around 2 o'clock in the afternoon, my daughter attempted to commit suicide, but they didn’t allow me to see my daughter. My concern is why they didn't bring my daughter to the ground floor or even admitted her to a hospital because, as it happened, her situation was getting worse. I trusted them because I believed they know how to assist my daughter," Villarin's mother said.

"They knew that my daughter was acting unusual, but why did they allow her to go to the restroom alone and lock the door," Villarin's mother added.

The guidance counsellor, in a separate interview, said Jona Mae's situation was not that worse because she was still lucid and could easily comprehend at the time of their conversation, but things just quickly happened.

"It would have been better if I was given the chance to talk to my daughter, so that I can ask her what's wrong or even hug her. That's all I can say. I can't accept what happened to my daughter. The school made lapses and anyone there is liable to what happened. We will file a case against them after the burial of my daughter," she said. (with reports from USJR intern Levirose Cabellero/PNA)
