TACLOBAN CITY – Local businessmen here have raised about PHP2 million for the procurement of personal protective equipment (PPE) for health workers.
Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) Tacloban-Leyte chapter president Eugene Tan said on Tuesday that 40 of their members joined the fundraising drive to help ease the burden of medical front-liners.
Recipient hospitals are the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center (EVRMC), Tacloban City Hospital, Remedios Trinidad Romualdez Hospital, Divine Word University Hospital, and ACE Medical Center in Tacloban City.
Other recipients are the Department of Health 8 (Eastern Visayas), Schistosomiasis Hospital, and Leyte Provincial Hospital (LPH) in Palo,
Leyte.
The donations include face shields, N-95 masks, goggles, shoe covers, and whole-body PPE.
“This is our way of showing our appreciation and recognition for all the efforts of all our front-liners to fight this coronavirus pandemic,” Tan said during the turnover held at a coffee shop here.
While businesses are badly affected by movement restrictions, PCCI members see this opportunity to serve the community by providing PPEs and disinfecting the city’s streets for three weeks.
Earlier, the business group distributed food packs to the city’s pedicab drivers, one of the most vulnerable groups.
The distribution of face shields for police officers and ambulant vendors is part of their future activities, Tan said.
He assured that their group has been looking into the welfare of their workers by providing them protective gear and vitamins at their workplace.
Employees who have to stay at home are provided with full salary and relief goods. (PNA)
